Sex Sells – Even for Wine – But Proceed with Caution

May 2nd, 2017

No need for a newsflash here – sex sells. Always has, likely always will. But that doesn’t mean it should be the first thing you think of when you put your marketing plans together. [level-members]
On the other hand, not acknowledging the basic biological imperative that is the human sex drive is kind of silly. There’s a lot of room to maneuver between prude and “hey, not in front of the kids!”
If you choose not to leave the Puritan ethos behind – and we understand you may not – your best bet is to do so with humor and with your audience in mind. You might even test some of your ideas with a small segment of your audience to gauge reaction.
The important thing there is to follow up and ask after your testing. Not everyone who has a strong opinion will share it without prodding. And it’s that silent majority whose insights you want most.
Finally, be careful not to force anything. If sex or sex and humor just doesn’t fit your public persona, it’s going to be a tougher sell. And nothing undermines good marketing more completely than the appearance of desperation.
Have fun, keep it light, and your marketing can make use of our natural attraction to others amongst our species …
