What Does Your Wine Shop Sound Like?

January 16th, 2018

Have you ever considered what your shop sounds like? Research suggests that it’s something you should pay attention to. [level-members]

According to research cited in this recent SevenFifty article, the sound around us affects our sense of taste. And while that’s clearly going to affect bar and restaurant consumption more than it will retail wine purchases, the impression your shop makes is critically important.

There’s nothing that proves that a clean, stark, well-lighted space and a funkier, darker place are inherently better or worse than one another. They’re just different. And as long as you go with what you’ve got, you can make either work.

Just be aware that pretending it doesn’t matter doesn’t make it not matter. If the last time you looked at what your shop looks, smells, and sounds like was the day you opened the doors, you probably have some work to do.

And the first thing you should do is bring in fresh eyes, ears, and noses. Sometimes, we get so used to your surroundings that you can’t see what’s right in front of us anymore. (Which explains why we all live perfectly contented lives in our own homes, but when it’s time to move we need to see dozens of new places before we can look past their flaws.)
