Wine Industry News: Shark Tank and William Shatner

Two tv-related news items worth sharing this week’s wine industry news: William Shatner has a new show, and a wine business snags what is apparently the biggest deal in Shark Tank history. [level-members]

First, Shatner. “William Shatner’s Brown Bag Wine Tasting” centers on interviews that Captain Kirk does with various celebrities, including Levar Burton and Alton Brown. As they wrap up, Shatner unveils a brown-bagged bottle of wine and asks the interviewee to describe it in terms they might use to talk about their professional career.

If nothing else, perhaps Shatner helps make wine a little less intimidating for a few more people. See more here.

On Shark Tank, Andrew McMurray, known to many from his co-ownership and management of Zachys, the retail wine shop and mail order wineseller based in Scarsdale, NY, landed a $2.5 million deal for 10% of his single-serving wine venture, Zipz.

It seems that the proprietary packaging is what attracted Kevin “Mr. Wonderful” O’Leary to the product. Mr. Wonderful’s ability to get the product into Costco is what attracted the Zipz team. Read more here.
