Thanksgiving Wine Marketing

November 16th, 2016

If you haven’t created email or web copy for your wine shop about what wines go with the big meal, do so now! [level-members]

Basically, the answer is, “everything.” Or, as Eric Asimov puts it in the New York Times, “There Are No Wrong Thanksgiving Wines.”

There are plenty of questions you should be asking someone who comes into the shop looking for Thanksgiving wines and whatever you post this week on email, your website, or social media should answer those same questions.

And Asimov sums up my own feelings on this better than I likely could have:

Which wines to choose? In our experience, the best choices are light-bodied, nimble, versatile wines that can be consumed with many varied foods over a span of hours. That means wines that are not high in alcohol, not oaky and not particularly tannic. They ought to be refreshing and energetic; you want wines with lively acidity.

Serve white, serve red, serve both. If you think the year’s strange political climate may cause fireworks, perhaps encourage less drinking if you have a combative crowd. Otherwise, pour plenty, make sure everyone has a bed or a designated driver, and don’t sweat the details.

And don’t miss the opportunity to remind your customers and followers that you have great ideas to match whatever they’re putting on the table.
