Retail Wine Industry News – New York Defends Its Turf

October 28th, 2013

Regulators in New York are either defending their turf or defending an antiquated distribution system at the expense of consumers, depending on who you ask. [level-members]

Wine Library, the wine shop made famous by its frequently profane second-generation proprietor, Gary Vaynerchuk, has been issued a cease-and-desist from state regulators in New York. The regulators have told the shop to stop shipping wine to NY-based customers.

Needless to say, NY wine shops are thrilled, though it’s a tougher call to say that this is good for wine shops everywhere.

The situation is complicated by the fact that though Wine Library is clearly breaking the law, the law has not been enforced in any consistent way in recent memory.

Other online retailers have taken notice and have already stopped or are planning on stopping shipments to New York addresses.
