Food & Wine Pairings: Really Bad Combinations to Avoid

November 7th, 2014

Usually on Fridays, we focus on really great food and wine pairings, frequently with recipes to match. Last week we couldn’t resist the obvious Halloween pairing: wine and candy. This week, it gets worse, literally: really bad food and wine combinations that you should encourage your customers to avoid at all costs. They’ll thank you … [level-members]

Our combinations this week com courtesy of the folks at Serious Eats. They’ve given us 20 or so truly terrible food & wine combinations. Some of the highlights include

  • Tannic reds and sushi
  • Cabernet and oysters
  • Spicy foods and oaked wines

Our favorite, though, is this one:

“Pop Rocks and Champagne—no question! Word on the streets of Épernay is that Mikey (the kid from the Life cereal commercials) was visiting Champagne and ate some Pop Rocks candy and washed them down with Clos du Mesnil and he exploded. Not sure if that’s true or not but that makes me cringe (and pour some Clos du Mesnil out for him) every time I pop a bottle. Why are they so terrible together you ask? Think about it…THE KID EXPLODED!!!”

That’s a killer combination.
