What Your Wine Shop Customers Are Reading: Martha Stewart Living Jan/Feb 2014

January 9th, 2014

The food and drinks focus of this issue is also the cover article – healthy meals to help keep your New Year’s resolutions humming along. Of course, before we get to the healthy stuff, we have to learn how to pipe the perfect heart-shaped whoopie pies for Valentine’s Day. [level-members]

The Craft section also suggests creating a cardboard carrier, a la a 6-pack carton, to carry a beautiful bouquet and bottle of bubbly. There’s a nice suggestion for your regulars coming in to prep for the mid-winter romance break.

Recipes in the issue include chicken pot pies, spicy clams with spaghetti, cheese soufflé, and seared rib-eye steak, all as art of the Cooking for Two feature and all available on perforated card stock for filing in your recipe container.

The Entertaining column includes Martha’s take on some Super Bowl classics with drinks that include Black Velvet stout (stout with sparking wine), Orange Wheat shandy (wheat beer and citrus juices)  and Tequila-shot Pilsner. (Just what you’d expect.)

There’s also a section on whole grains and healthier backing, but not a lot to pair. The section on poaching includes everything from poached salmon in white wine (screaming for more white wine to accompany) to chicken breast poached in buttermilk. (I’m taking suggestions on pairings for that …)
